I killed the Bad Man

Completed the Rondo of Blood remake today. The beginning of Symphony of the Night would be so much cooler if I had played this game before it. Now I need to actually find all the maidens so I can unlock the TRUE ENDING! Dracula is such a pushover with only 2 forms, a double jump that actually works, and a standard attack that works like Richter’s cross subweapon. But Richter controls like a boat with legs. Possibly even a boat without legs. I will bear with Maria’s lame battle speak and just pretend she is saying “Die monster! You don’t belong in this world!”

And I just noticed the flames that highlight the selected item on the game menu cast accurate shadows on the background as they move through the different options. Nice touch.

“Overly complicated combination attack!”

A small feature I enjoy in Castlevania is the bosses dying desperation attack on you. It adds just a little bit more tension to the boss battles.

Back to level 7 somehow missing all the maidens a second time. I made it all the way through losing only two lives which I’m pretty happy with.

No Damage Bonus

Maria really does break the game. I finished a level without any damage. That just does not happen in Castlevania. I’ve made my way to the final level but I’m poking around the earlier levels now trying to find the captured maidens.

Dracula Lives again!

I was stuck on level 4 of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. Switching to Maria was the best decision of my life. So much smoother and well… easier to play because her agility breaks the level design. Whole rooms can be skipped, enemies are easier to dodge, and the quicker attacks help greatly. Her only minus is her fragility. That, and killing enemies by flipping the bird at them. And cats. And you can turn into a turtle but I don’t understand how that helps. I was rocking the game until I hit a boss rush. I hate boss rushes. Perhaps one day I will finish the game.

I did unlock the original Rondo of Blood, which is interesting. I don’t know if I would rank it as the best Castlevania ever ( I think 4 is) but it is a solid game which holds up well today. I do hope it shows up on the Virtual Console so I can actually see what is going on.
