The mist… it burns!

I gave up on defeating the super boss wall only to run into a less-super boss wall which was easily defeated. Unfortunately I think I’ve discovered the fatal flaw in FF12. Quickenings, a special high-damage attack that you have 4 seconds to spam as much as you can, make boss battles an incredibly simple affair. Toss 3/4ths of the life bar away then do the whole thing over with the people in your reserve party. It devolves the boss battles into a simple and boring process. On the other hand my party is now in possession of the magical equivalent of a nuclear bomb so I am curious where the story is leading.

Freakin’ Wall

I am stuck fighting a damn wall in Final Fantasy 12. I could just run away, but I know I will get a cool sword if I persevere. I like shiny objects.

Testify

I begrudgingly admit I am enjoying Final Fantasy 12. Except for the part where I wandered in circles around the desert for most of tonight. Sky pirates make everything better in video games.

What’s done is done

I was expecting to hate the characters in FF12. However, I think I have a new favorite in Balthier. Fran is pretty cool too. Vaan does suck as expected, and what is worse is the intro got my hopes up that he wouldn’t suck. The battle system is growing on me, more of a management deal than handling every individual command. It’s sort of slow going so far but we will see how that turns out.

RPG Day

I have a nasty habit of playing RPGs halfway through then suddenly dropping them like a pretty much anything my clumsy hands carry. Off the top of my head I’m about midway through DQ8, FFX-2, Odin Sphere, and Persona 3. This habit is not as bad as my other bad habit of playing all the way through an RPG to the final dungeon then getting bored/frustrated and never playing the game again, see: FF1, FF4, FF6.

I decided I better get down to business and I popped in Dragon Quest 8. Getting back into RPGs is rather difficult, as i don’t remember what I was doing or where I am going or why I am making meth in my alchemy pot. I think figured out the reason why I end up dropping RPGs. I meticulously scour every where I go for every item, bit of dialog and environmental interaction. Going into a new area freaks me out, and I need to systematically process every little bit of the area. In the hour or so I played today I made my way to a new town and started on my next quest. That’s it. The rest of the hour was rummaging through random people’s belongings looking for mini medals or alchemy recipes. I don’t like missing things, which might also explain my internet addiction.

Even starting to play DQ had its own interruptions. I decided to try out the Final Fantasy 12 demo that came along with the game. It wasn’t bad but I don’t really have an urge to play through the real game. Fate of course has its own plans when a family member came in collectors edition of FF12 in hand. I’ll reserve my comments for the full game.
